  • Why use this resource?


This resource has been developed to support teachers who are establishing a classroom in a new school year. It provides a theoretical and practical guide to the new year. Theory based on current research explains the how and why of classroom environments. The practical activities and games provide teachers with a range of strategies that demonstrate the ‘how’ of establishing a classroom.Time to get to know a class is vital, expecially in the first few weeks of school in order to create a safe and condusive environment to learning (Marzano & Pickering, 1997). This pack is specific to that purpose and to save valuable time planning for the establishing of routines within the classroom.
  • What are the implications of your focus topic for educators and how does your resource address these?
All educators will be required to establish new classroom many times throughout their career. This resource addresses the issues and considerations that will need to be addressed with each new cohort.
It can be adaped to suit any age level and cohort. It is not the be all and end all of resources, each teacher will be adding their own touches and ideas to this resource to make it their own. It is also a tool to encourage teachers to consider the importance of the start of the school year with relevant and realistic activities to assist with making the start of the school year a positive experience for all.
  • What is the significance of your focus topic and the resource in relation to the broader notion of Resilience and SEL?

If a classroom learning manager seeks to establish a positive culture within the classroom from the first day and seeks to embed the notion of resilience and social emotion learning into this positive culture students will be more supported and are more likely to learn and feel comfortable within this environment.
teaching today in the world of globalisation, new technologies and social structures needs to be relevent to todays studetns (Goundwater-Smith, Ewing & Cornu, 2011). Teaching needs to develop with the new ideologies that are availabel. Incorporating social and emotional learning into the classroom can be a way of creating a truely collaboratve classroom where rules and routines are jointly arrived at and adhered to in order to create a welcoming classroom.

  • What partnerships can be generated through the use of the resource, and how is “connectedness” to stakeholders developed?
Learning managers will develop positive partnerships with their learners as they engage in the use of this resourse. Connectedness with learners is vital for success (REFERENCE) and is developed through the activities and actions recommended by this resource.
